July 26, 2011

The Shotley Grove footbridge across the River Derwent has been hoisted into place and bolted onto its concrete foundations.

Hopefully it will not be many more weeks before the bridge will be open to pedestrians.

Contractors are lifting the new footbridge into position at Shotley Grove tomorrow morning.

Today the two halves were delivered and joined together ready for hoisting into position sometime tomorrow morning.

Open Meeting 28 June

June 27, 2011

One item on the agenda of the Open Meeting tomorrow is “Development at Shotley Bridge Hospital” which will cover the planning application by Story Homes for housing development there. Plans of their proposals will be on display.

As a prelude to this item, Jack Cavanagh has kindly agreed to give an illustrated talk on the ‘historical’ development of the site, from it’s inception as a workhouse, the building of the General Hospital and its final demise.  Jack used to be the Chief Medical Scientific Officer in Haematology at Shotley Bridge General Hospital and is Chairman of the Consett & District Heritage Initiative.

The meeting starts at 7.45pm with complimentary coffee/tea & biscuits from 7.30Pm.  The Trust’s AGM starts at 7.00pm.

Summer bedding

June 11, 2011

Today the summer bedding arrived for planting up the Trust’s 50 tubs in the Conservation Area.

Volunteers removed the winter bedding, then replanted the tubs with Geraniums, Begonias, Bidens and Lobelias. Each tub is to be badged with the Trust’s new logo.  The daffodils are to be replanted in the Junior School grounds.

The Trust has spent over £400 to brighten up the village as part of the RHS “It’s Your Neighbourhood” initiative.  Hopefully the flowers will be in full colour when the Britain in Bloom judges come in July/August.

Thank you to the volunteers, Beveridges Nursery and to Councillor Barnett & The Snod’s Quest Club who helped provide funding.

New footpath at ‘The Cut’

June 6, 2011

In March 2010 I reported on a meeting with the Trust and an officer from Durham County Council who was invited to look at the problem of water flowing down the footpath ‘the Cut’ from Briary Gardens to The Terrace.

Work has just been carried out to drain the spring water away from the path and the surface of the path has been stoned and re-dressed.

It has been suggested that the embankments be planted with Bluebells, Primroses and wild flowers.
