Olympic torch relay

May 20, 2012

At 4pm on Saturday 16th June the Olympic torch relay will be passing through Shotley Bridge.

The Shotley Bridge Business and Community Partnership. which organised the Victorian Christmas Spectacular, is inviting you to spend the afternoon [from 1pm] in the village centre, prior to the torch’s arrival.  The village will be decorated with bunting and red, white & blue flowers. Thanks to John Beales for putting up and taking down the bunting, free of charge.

Primary School children dressed up in red, white & blue will be presented with a gold [chocolate] medal.  There will be flags for children to wave, but come early as there are limited numbers of these and the medals.   Then join in the fun of a family ‘Treasure Trail’ around the village centre.  All correct entries will be included in a draw for family ‘day out’ passes. There will also be business ‘special offers’ and face painting.

Further information about the Torch Relay can be found on the Durham County Council website.

Spring judging

April 26, 2012

Two judges from ‘Northumbria in Bloom’ toured the village for an hour this afternoon, to assess the Trust’s entry in the A2 villages section of this year’s RHS ‘Britain in Bloom’ campaign.

25% of the marks will be awarded from this first visit, with the remainder following the summer visit on 4th July.

Horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation are the three themes which will be judged.  ‘Britain in Bloom’ is no longer just about ‘pretty flower displays’.
