The Triangle

March 8, 2019

Half a dozen Trust members spent a couple of hours this morning collecting debris, moss and leaves from the Triangle in the centre of the village. The block paving around the history board has been cleared of moss and weeds. Eighteen  bags of compostable materials were removed, for the council to collect.

Thank you to the volunteers and to Isabella’s who provided complimentary coffees on completion.

The council intend cleaning the moss from the tarmac areas and repainting the fencing and furniture. Two new seats are also to be provided with the last of the S106 money from the Storey Homes development on the former hospital site.

Shotley Bridge Directory

August 24, 2017

The Trust has published an update to the directory of  community facilities, clubs and groups. It has now been delivered to most residents in Shotley Bridge. The original directory, published in 2010 was well out of date and few copies were still available. It is hoped that the new directory can be kept up to date annually with revisions posted on-line.

Thank you to our local Durham County Councillors who provided a grant to help fund the publication.

If you do not have a printed copy it is available from most of the local businesses that have advertised in the brochure or alternatively download the on-line version. [1.6MB]

Blooming report

October 25, 2015

Over thirty members of the Trust attended the recent Open Meeting, at which a report was given about the Trust’s entry in Northumbria in Bloom this year.

Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in our bid for ‘Gold’, being just 4 marks [out of 200] short of attaining the top award in the competition, but we managed to achieve our highest score ever and another ‘Silver Gilt’, for the third consecutive year.

IMG_0025_2

Disappointed that the extra improvements and  volunteer effort this year had only resulted in achieving another ‘Silver Gilt’, it was announced that the ‘Blooming’ committee had decided not to enter the competition in 2016.  It was emphasised, though, that the high standard of planting in the tubs, baskets, troughs and sustainable beds throughout the conservation area would be continued by volunteers next year, but without the extra work behind the scenes needed to impress judges. Hopefully the local businesses will continue with their own floral displays too, to keep Sholey Bridge ‘Blooming’.

The slideshow presentation given at the meeting was taken from the photographs in the Portfolio, which had been presented to the judges when they visited in July …

Judges tour

July 22, 2014

Yesterday, two judges from Northumbria in Bloom were escorted around the village by members of the ‘Blooming’ committee.

They seemed impressed with what they were shown during the 2 hour walkabout.  But we won’t know until September how well we did.

Thank you to all the businesses, residents, school and volunteers for putting on such a good show.

Willow Burn donation

March 26, 2014

Yesterday, at the Trust’s Open Meeting, a cheque for £1275 was presented to the Willow Burn Hospice, on behalf of the Shotley Bridge Business and Community Partnership. The money was raised at the Partnership’s Victorian Saturday event last November. After receiving the cheque from Garth Johnson the Trust’s treasurer, Sue Fox gave an update on funding for phase II of the development at Maiden Law, Lanchester, for which £2.2m will be needed. She also made a plea for more volunteers to help with administration and event management.

Christmas event success

December 1, 2013

Yesterday, on a fine crisp day, many local residents and others from further afield turned out to enjoy activities and shopping in the village centre, whilst raising money in support of Willow Burn and Blooming Shotley Bridge. Colin Briggs, Look North regional newsreader, arrived with Father Christmas to announce the start of the event and enjoyed chatting to local residents during the morning.

Norman Hogg, a committee member of the Village Trust did an excellent job of Town Crier, keeping everyone informed of the programme.

We are especially grateful to the North East Carriage Company who for the fifth consecutive year has  provided the well presented and popular horse and carriage rides, in support of our local charities. Not only do the horses look spectacular but they also help to slow the traffic down.

The day ended with carol singing around the tree to the sound of Consett Brass, which was lit by Father Christmas with an encore of fireworks in the sky. Thank you to local councillors Stephen Robinson and Peter Oliver who continue the tradition of providing the tree and to Scott of Reaction Fireworks who provided the finale.

Thanks also to all the participating businesses, entertainers, school choirs, volunteer stewards from Shotley Bridge Village Trust and the support of the local policing team.

If you have any different photos please email them to me at sbvt@singleton14.eclipse.co.uk for inclusion in our photo gallery.
