The bed in the triangle has been planted with herbaceous plants and bulbs, whilst the bed opposite Rumi’s now has perennial shrubs and climbers.  The pansies there will be replaced with bulbs after flowering.

The Sunflower seeds sown in the bed opposite the Golden Flower have now germinated.  When in flower there should be a mass of golden yellow, to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of RHS Britain in Bloom.

Volunteers will be planting a golden theme in the tubs and troughs this weekend, which will hopefully be in full bloom when the Northumbria in Bloom summer judging takes place on 21 July.

Spring judging

April 22, 2014

Two judges from Northumbria in Bloom came today to assess the ‘Blooming Shotley Bridge’ entry in the village category.

Members of the Blooming committee showed them around the conservation area, Junior School grounds and ‘The Cut’, which has been added to the judging area as there are plans for nature conservation improvements.

Although it was raining, the village looked bright and colourful with the winter bedding.

Summer judging is scheduled for the 21 July.

Blocked culvert

November 9, 2013

The culvert at the bottom of Benfieldside Road, which regularly overflows during heavy rain to flood Snows Green Road, is being cleared of debris by the County Council.

There is also a scheme proposed to create an enlarged hole in the wall on Snows Green Road to divert any future flood water back into the Snows Green Burn.  This should prevent a lake being formed, which has previously blocked the road and overflowed down into the village centre.

Planting violas

November 2, 2013

This morning volunteers planted 50 tubs in the conservation area, just in time before the heavens opened at lunchtime.  The bulbs and plants will be well watered in by now, as it has poured down most of the afternoon.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of  RHS Britain in Bloom, we have planted yellow daffodils and red tulips having a yellow & orange centre together with orange, yellow and white violas.

Today the Village Trust was awarded a Silver Gilt Medal certificate at the Northumbria in Bloom awards ceremony, held at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland.
