‘The Snods’ Annual Litter Pick

April 7, 2012

Shotley Low Quarter Parish Council are organising their “Annual Litter Pick” on Saturday 14th April, starting at 9.30 a.m. from St John’s Parish Hall.  They “trawl” the main B6278 through Snods Edge and the local roads leading off this main road.

All equipment such as pickers, hi-viz tabards, gloves & bags etc. are supplied (and usually a cup of something!).   (All the rubbish bags are collected by a trailer, brought to the Hall, and then Northumberland County Council collect & remove the the next working day).

It is a worthwhile event to help keep the local countryside free of litter.  If you can spare a couple of hours you will be welcome.

Litter pick results

April 1, 2012

This weekend, 40 bags of rubbish were collected by 15 volunteers from the Village Trust.

All the litter that could be seen from highways approaching the village [as well as within the village itself] including the Derwent Walk, verges, public open space and private land was picked up.  7 bags of litter was collected along the A694, between the Shotley Bridge and East Law.  Most of it being food and drink containers thrown out of vehicles from takeaways, off licences and supermarkets.

We shall need to tidy up the village centre again just before the Spring judging for our entry in Northumbria in Bloom takes place on Thursday 26th April.

Two years ago we picked up 25 bags, but with fewer volunteers we did not reach as far out from the centre of the village.

We are having another litter pick on 9th June, prior to the Olympic torch arriving on the 16th.

Shotley Bridge ‘In Bloom’

March 18, 2012

The inaugural meeting for all the entrants in Northumbria in Bloom took place at Spennymoor Town Hall last Tuesday. There are 14 places entered in the ‘village’ category, including Shotley Bridge.

The first judging will be in April, to see the spring bedding, followed by a second to see the summer displays. The presentation ceremony will be held on September 11th, if we have success in winning an award.
