Men in Black

Two volunteers spent yesterday evening painting the heritage board and seats in the ‘Triangle’ in readiness for the Northumbria in Bloom judging next week.

The recent warm and sunny weather is helping the hanging baskets, tubs and barrier baskets to come into full bloom.

25th Anniversary

The Trust celebrated its 25th anniversary at the AGM last Tuesday. Councillor Stephen Robinson cut the cake and everybody else ate it.

There was an exhibition of the work of the Trust over the last 25 years and a ‘Then & Now’ display of village photos.

The Open Meeting discussed  the County Council’s detailed proposals for  urban realm improvements in the village centre but more estimates are needed before a final list of schemes can be agreed.

In the ‘Historic’ section of ‘Photo Galleries’ there are now over 35 old photographs showing scenes in and around the village.  More photos will be added in future.  If anyone has old photos they would like to add to the page please email them to the secretary.

Exhibition of local interest

Next week, from the 9th – 12th May, Consett & District Heritage Initiative will be holding an exhibition of historic photos in St Patrick’s Church Hall, Consett.

They now have a Facebook page, with over 1500 members.

The Trust will be represented, showing old photos of Shotley Bridge and information about the history of the village.  Refreshments will be available, so please call in if you are shopping in Consett.

Open Meeting 28 June

One item on the agenda of the Open Meeting tomorrow is “Development at Shotley Bridge Hospital” which will cover the planning application by Story Homes for housing development there. Plans of their proposals will be on display.

As a prelude to this item, Jack Cavanagh has kindly agreed to give an illustrated talk on the ‘historical’ development of the site, from it’s inception as a workhouse, the building of the General Hospital and its final demise.  Jack used to be the Chief Medical Scientific Officer in Haematology at Shotley Bridge General Hospital and is Chairman of the Consett & District Heritage Initiative.

The meeting starts at 7.45pm with complimentary coffee/tea & biscuits from 7.30Pm.  The Trust’s AGM starts at 7.00pm.
