Housing on former hospital site

July 21, 2010

Community consultations on the housing plans for the redevelopment of part of the former Shotley Bridge Hospital site are expected to take place mid-October.

The developers have now exchanged contracts with the Homes and Communities Agency and they are are looking to submit a Reserved Matters application by the end of November, with planning approval anticipated in February/March next year.

Outline planning permission was granted in April 2008 with agreement to provide funding for improvements to the Derwent Walk and Shotley Bridge village centre.

Story Homes were selected as the preferred developer in May 2009.

Cumbria-based housebuilder Story Homes were celebrating last month after scooping a major award in the hotly contested ‘House of the Year’ category in the prestigious Scottish Home awards.

Shotley Grove footbridge

April 24, 2010

Work has started on preparing the site for the new footbridge which will replace the one washed away in the floods in September 2008.

Trees and bushes have been felled on both banks of the river to allow for access and the foundations for the bridge to be constructed.

Planning approval and Environment Agency consent for the bridge have been obtained and the main contractor is drawing up a works programme. However, there is no start date yet because there are a number of logistical issues to be resolved, regarding road access for the lifting crane.

The trees have been reduced so as to help with the crane lift. It’s planned that the assembled 31m deck span will be positioned alongside the river’s edge wall bounding the car park before being lifted into place. The tree works have been done early prior to any birds setting up nests.
