Blooming Shotley Bridge

March 10, 2010

Following the last open meeting, volunteers from the Village Trust met today to form an action group with a view to ‘greening up’ the local area. Helen Douglas, Civic Pride Officer, Northern Area, attended to offer advice and assistance from Durham County Council.

The Group intends to register the village in the Britain in Bloom Neighbourhood Awards.  But the first step is to identify suitable sites for treatment and to decide on the boundary for the scheme. Then an action plan will need to be devised to prioritise projects and funding sourced.

It is hoped that the Shotley Bridge Business and Community Partnership will give their full support to the initiative.

Groundwork North East and Durham County Council are also assisting.
Bring gardening gloves if you have any – all other equipment provided.
All children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.

Village Directory

November 23, 2009

Work has started on designing the first Shotley Bridge Directory, providing information on community facilities, clubs and groups in the village and at Snods Edge.  A grant application has been made and this, together with advertisements from local businesses, should pay for 10,000 copies to be printed in time for distribution at the Victorian Christmas Weekend.

Residents will also receive a copy through their letterboxes, which will be delivered by volunteers.  The funding will also cover an updated reprint in December next year.

The publication will also include information about the history of the village and the Village Trust.

Victorian Weekend Volunteers

November 16, 2009

Volunteers from the Trust met this evening to finalise arrangements for the Victorian Christmas Weekend that is being held in the village centre the first weekend of December.  This follows a successful Open Weekend in March.

The Trust offered its support to the local business and community partnership to help organise and manage the event. We shall be litter picking in the mornings and stewarding after lunch, during the musical performances in the village square, as well as organising the Victorian Costume competition.

We are also organising the collections for the North of England Children’s Cancer Research Fund for this charity event.
