Tubs in place

November 2, 2010

The 50 tubs purchased by the Trust have now all been positioned in the Conservation Area. Volunteers who have offered to maintain the features will shortly be contacted about which tubs have been allocated to them.

The photo shows the repositioning of one of the tubs by the village notice board.  This morning, 4 members also planted 200 crocus bulbs at the front of the grassed area on the opposite side of Front Street, which were provided by the County Council’s Civic Pride Team, through their 2010 Bulb Planting Challenge.

Changing seasons

October 29, 2010

Garth Johnson, a committee member, is taking a monthly photograph of the River Derwent – the view from the bridge in the centre of the village.

The photos will be posted as a slide show in the River Derwent photo gallery [see pages]. Over time, they will give an insight into the effect of seasonal change on the riverside.

Here are the first 2 photos for September and October.

Housing development plans

October 20, 2010

If you missed the exhibition yesterday, Story Homes have now posted the boards that were on display on their website.

They show constraints and opportunities, concept development, housetype design and potential sketch layout.

Comments are requested by 2nd November, using a feedback form.

Public exhibition

October 13, 2010

Story Homes, the developers of the former Shotley Bridge Hospital site, are holding an exhibition next Tuesday, 19th October, about the proposed residential development. It is being held in St Cuthbert’s Church Hall, Church Bank, 2 – 7 pm.

This poster gives more details of the exhibition. They also propose to post more information from the day on their website.

Blooming ahead

October 8, 2010

Final approval of a £2000 grant from the Derwent Valley Partnership has now been given and 50 tubs have been ordered. For this winter they are being provided this month, ready filled with peat free compost, daffodils and winter pansies. Next year and in the following years [until the tubs fall apart] the Trust will need to purchase plants for summer and winter bedding.

Junior School pupils are going to maintain the 6 tubs outside their gates. We only need a few more volunteers to sign up to plant and maintain 2 or 3 tubs each.

The red dots on the maps show the location of the tubs. [Click on each image to enlarge.]

On Monday, a judge from Northumbria in Bloom came to give advice and suggested that we should first concentrate on the Conservation Area in the centre of the village leading up to and including Snows Green. In future years we hope to expand the area covered by the initiative and enter the Britain in Bloom competition proper.
