The next Open Meeting of the Village Trust is to be held in 3 weeks time, on Tuesday evening 24 March, when Russell Black will be giving a talk about the Memorial Cottages. Everyone is welcome.
A proposal for housing development and new cricket facilities at the Spa Grounds is finally being considered by Durham County Council, following a protracted period of consultation and report submissions. The scheme was first considered by Derwentside District Council in 2009.
The planning application is being considered by members of the County Planning Committee in the Council Chamber at County Hall, next Tuesday, 3 March 2015 at 2pm.
If you have a couple of hours to spare the committee report is an interesting read.
The report states that the original Derwentside decision, where members were minded to approve the application, is no longer relevant to the determination of this application, because that decision is now considered to be flawed owing to the lack of crucial information. Therefore, the application needs to be considered afresh with all material considerations properly assessed and a new decision made.
It is being recommended for refusal by officers.
UPDATE
The planning committee resolved to refuse permission. Have a look at the reasons in the decision notice.
Over the next few weeks Durham County Council will progress work on spending the S106 funding for environmental improvement schemes in the village centre.
Last November, new copings were laid around the flower bed opposite the Golden Flower. Unfortunately the work was affected by frosty weather and quite a few of the stones have since been dislodged. The Council are awaiting better weather before attempting reconstruction and then re-turfing of the grassed areas.
Contract costs for the reconstruction of the original Pant [drinking fountain] and new seating area opposite Rumi’s mean that there is sufficient funding for additional conservation street lighting as well as repaving in front of the shops.
Construction works will be starting in the village centre this coming week to upgrade the paving on Front Street, with work anticipated to last about 3 weeks. Following completion of this, work should start on constructing 2 new parking bays [replacing the rose beds] in front of Rumi’s, which should take another week. Limited parking restrictions are to be introduced in this lay-by, too.
Dates for the installation of the new lighting and seating area around the proposed Pant are not yet known.
Blooming Shotley Bridge will be raising funds at The Snods Christmas Fair this Saturday 6th December, 10am – 4pm.
We will have a stall of ‘New’ and ‘Nearly New’ items, many suitable for Christmas presents, and a Lucky Dip for those who just want to give a donation. Items have been donated by SBVT members and friends, so all proceeds will go to planting flowers and shrubs in Shotley Bridge conservation area.
There will also be ‘Shotley Bridge’ pin badges for sale, which will make good stocking fillers.
Three businesses were presented with certificates and Beveridge’s vouchers today, for the quality of their hanging baskets this summer.
