Keep Britain Tidy

April 2, 2013

Each year, Keep Britain Tidy identifies the companies whose products are littered most. From fast food containers to drink cans and sweets wrappers, they count the brands that create the most litter…on streets, in parks or beside water. They call it “England’s Great Litter Count’.

They release the results to the media. And because litter affects so many people, they usually list the companies whose products litter the most.

This year, for the first time, ordinary people were invited to take part, during the first two weeks of February. Look at the results for the North East.

It will be interesting to compare the litter which is to be collected in Shotley Bridge this coming Saturday!

If you can spare a couple of hours … we are meeting at the car park next to the Golden Flower takeaway at 9.30am

Derwent Valley Landscape

March 17, 2013

There is to be an open public consultation event to discuss the Derwent Valley Landscape Partnership National Lottery bid at Citizens House in Consett on Wednesday 20th March at 4:30- 6:30. The aim of the event is to find out what local people would like to see happening in the Derwent Valley area as part of this bid.

Along with partners, Groundwork North East are developing this bid.   The aim is to secure up to £3 million to help to protect and develop the cultural, natural and industrial heritage of the Derwent Valley, increasing visitors and improve the environment for people and wildlife. Groundwork are currently in the early stages of developing the funding bid and want to make sure that it represents what the local communities in the area want. Groundwork also has just launched an online survey about the project at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/derwentvalleynortheast

Snows Green lake

November 26, 2012

This weekend, for at least the 3rd time this year, Snows Green Road became a lake between the Junior School and Snows Green.

Snows Green lake

The lake appears during periods of heavy rain because two culverts at Elm Park and at the bottom of Benfieldside Road are partially blocked. Water overflows and runs down the road instead, forming a lake, until the road drains there are able to cope.

At the end of June, when the lake overflowed, a huge volume of water cascaded down into the village centre and flooded properties, before it finally found its way into the River Derwent.

The County Council has been made aware of the problem and intend clearing the culverts. To prevent the lake forming, the Trust has suggested that a larger drain hole be created at the lowest point in the wall at Snows Green, with a gulley across the footpath, so as to allow standing water to more easily escape back into the Burn.
