Shotley Grove footbridge

April 24, 2010

Work has started on preparing the site for the new footbridge which will replace the one washed away in the floods in September 2008.

Trees and bushes have been felled on both banks of the river to allow for access and the foundations for the bridge to be constructed.

Planning approval and Environment Agency consent for the bridge have been obtained and the main contractor is drawing up a works programme. However, there is no start date yet because there are a number of logistical issues to be resolved, regarding road access for the lifting crane.

The trees have been reduced so as to help with the crane lift. It’s planned that the assembled 31m deck span will be positioned alongside the river’s edge wall bounding the car park before being lifted into place. The tree works have been done early prior to any birds setting up nests.

Blooming meeting

March 24, 2010

The ‘Blooming Shotley Bridge’ group’ held a walkabout in the village today to decide on the boundary for the Britain in Bloom Neighbourhood Award, for which the Village Trust intends to register.

It was also looking at potential sites for improvement within the Conservation Area.

The ‘Shotley Bridge’ entry signs on the River Derwent Bridge, on the A691 near Shotley Grove Road and on the A694 near the Spa Grounds are to be used to define the extent of the neighbourhood, but whether to go beyond Snows Green as far as Elm Park has still to be decided.

Photographs, for display at the next open meeting of the Trust, are to be taken of the potential sites that could be improved or planted with bulbs and flowers. An action plan and funding will need to be discussed at the next meeting of the group.

BIG Tidy Up morning

March 13, 2010

The Benfieldside, Blackhill, Bridgehill and Shotley Bridge Partnership organised a BIG Tidy Up this morning. Volunteers met at the Bridgehill communal room to collect their bags, equipment and instructions before setting off in groups to pick up litter from hotspots [which had been identified by survey].

A big thank you to Consett Rugby Club, particularly the U17 & U18 teams, who came along to help tidy up litter hot spots in Shotley Bridge – along the Derwent Walk, around the Benfieldside playing fields and down by the riverside at Shotley Grove.

Thankyou also to the ten residents of Shotley Bridge who found time to give their support to pick up litter around the village centre and at Snows Green.

In total, nearly 150 bags of rubbish were collected by 75 volunteers from the litter strewn open spaces throughout the Partnership’s area.

This afternoon an officer from Durham County Council was invited by the Trust to look at the problem of water flowing down the footpath between Briary Gardens and The Briary. This public right of way is well used but a spring behind The Briary is causing the path to become muddy and wet.

It is hoped that the ‘stream’ can be drained away from the path and the surface re-dressed.

At the Trust’s Open Meeting last night a cheque presentation was made to the North of England Children’s Cancer Research Fund. The money was collected by the Shotley Bridge Business and Community Partnership as part of their Victorian Christmas Weekend in December.

Amy Vella of Imago handed cheques totalling £1487 to Colin Peacock, who gave a talk about the Research Fund.

Thanks go to the local business community who helped raise the funds, particularly Imago and the North East Carriage Company, each raising a third of the total.

Garth Johnson of the Trust, who organised the charity collection, said: ” We distributed around 30 collection boxes and every box was returned with money in it adding up to over £400. We are also particularly grateful to the Carriage Company for donating all of their takings over the weekend. Let’s hope the Partnership can come up with more ideas to raise even more money at a future event in the Village.”
